The unassuming heavyweights: Why drive and deflection drums are the foundation of every conveyor system
20.08.2026
When we talk about conveyor technology, most people immediately think of kilometer-long tracks of gleaming support rollers. They carry the load, dampen shocks, and ensure smooth operation. But what actually drives the system? What maintains the enormous tension so that thousands of tons of material don't get stuck?
They are the unassuming heavyweights at the ends of the system: drive, deflection, constriction, and tensioning drums. They are the true powerhouses of conveyor technology. If a support roller fails, the belt usually continues to run. However, if a drive drum fails, the entire production line comes to a standstill.
The requirement: When raw power meets precision
Drums in conveyor belt systems are subjected to extreme mechanical stresses. They must not only bear the weight of the belt and the conveyed goods, but also transmit the enormous torque of the drive motor to the conveyor belt.
- The drive drum: It is the heart of the power transmission. Through the frictional engagement between the drum surface and the belt, it drives the entire system. If the coefficient of friction is too low, the belt slips – resulting in immense wear and heat generation.
- The deflection drum: It is located at the opposite end of the conveyor belt and guides the belt back 180 degrees. It must withstand extreme tensile forces to maintain the required belt tension.
- Constriction and tension drums: They increase the wrap angle on the drive drum or ensure consistent belt tension in automatic tensioning stations despite temperature fluctuations and belt elongation.
The fight against slippage: Which coating is the right one?
To ensure the drive drum transfers its power to the belt without loss, a bare steel casing is often insufficient – especially in wet, dirty conditions or on steep inclines. This is where choosing the right coating comes into play:
- Rubber floor coverings (with diamond profile): The classic choice for general applications. The profile channels water and fine dirt to the outside and noticeably increases the coefficient of friction (grip) between the drum and the belt.
- Ceramic tiles: The all-purpose weapon for extreme conditions. Ceramic studs embedded in rubber literally bite into the underside of the belt. Even under the toughest mud, ice, or heavy-duty conditions, they prevent any slippage.
Design checklist: What designers need to pay attention to
A drum is not an off-the-shelf product, but must be precisely calculated to fit the static requirements of the system. The following factors determine the design at FMG:
- The drum diameter: If you bend a thick belt around a drum that is too small, the fabric reinforcement of the belt will be destroyed. The diameter must match the belt class.
- The axle design: Bending moments on the shaft are the most frequent cause of shaft fractures. We rely on high-strength steels and sophisticated clamping set connections.
- The intended use: Do you need crowning (a slight thickening in the middle of the drum) so that the belt runs automatically centered?
Conclusion: Precision in measurement ensures the flow
FMG drive and deflection drums are designed for maximum service life. A precisely manufactured drum protects the expensive conveyor belt, prevents unplanned downtime, and reduces the energy consumption of the entire conveyor line.
